The Palm Tree Did Not Change. We Did.
I have spent the last few years asking myself a deceptively simple question.
What should architecture in the UAE be made from?
Not stylistically. Materially.
Every civilisation has eventually developed a material language that reflected its geography, climate and technical capability. Northern Europe built with forests because forests were abundant. Mediterranean cultures built with stone because stone endured. Materials were never aesthetic choices first; they were technological responses to place.
The UAE has long understood this.
Before oil, before concrete, before glass towers, there was the palm tree.
For generations it offered food, shade and shelter. Palm trunks formed structural frames. Fronds became roofs, partitions and screens. The palm was not celebrated because it was symbolic. It was used because it was available. Like every honest building material throughout history, necessity came before poetry.
But necessity also had limits.
Palm fronds could not span large distances. They could not become structural walls. They belonged to a technological moment whose possibilities were defined by the engineering of its time.
Today, that condition has changed.
Not because the palm tree evolved.
Because we did.
Advances in material science and manufacturing have fundamentally altered what can be done with agricultural waste. Dry palm fronds that once had little value can now be engineered into structural sheet material with predictable performance. The biological material remains the same. Human knowledge does not.
This distinction matters.
Too often, discussions about regional architecture become trapped between nostalgia and imitation. We either reproduce historical forms without asking whether they still make technical sense, or we import foreign construction systems simply because they represent contemporary progress.
Neither approach interests me.
Architecture should not choose between history and innovation.
It should allow one to transform the other.
I grew up in Al Khawaneej, in a place my family remembers very differently from the one that exists today. Within a generation, landscapes changed, infrastructure appeared, public life expanded and entirely new institutions emerged. Whether one attributes those changes to government policy, economic development or long-term planning, the observable fact remains that the UAE has repeatedly demonstrated a willingness to invest in futures that did not previously exist.
That willingness fascinates me more than any individual project.
One example sits only a few kilometres from where I was born.
The Mohammed Bin Rashid Space Centre represents an institution whose purpose is inherently future-oriented. Space exploration demands long planning horizons, technical innovation and collective investment in problems whose rewards may not be realised for decades. The architecture that houses such ambitions cannot simply provide enclosure. It becomes part of the culture that makes those ambitions believable.
The same principle extends beyond the space programme itself.
When the UAE launched the Hope Probe, it demonstrated scientific capability, industrial coordination and national ambition. Those achievements matter independently of architecture. But they also raise an architectural question.
If our institutions increasingly represent a confident, future-facing nation, what should their material language communicate?
Concrete alone cannot answer that question.
Imported timber alone cannot answer it either.
The answer, I believe, lies in developing materials that could only emerge from this landscape.
This is why DesertBoard interests me.
Across the UAE, naturally fallen palm fronds are collected and transformed into engineered construction panels. This is not an attempt to preserve tradition through sentiment. It is an example of manufacturing creating entirely new architectural possibilities from an existing ecological resource.
There is an important difference between recycling as environmental virtue and recycling as cultural production.
The first reduces waste.
The second creates identity.
Those are not the same project.
When I founded Banou Studio, I did not begin with furniture or speakers. I began with a material question.
Could a contemporary object communicate something fundamentally Emirati without relying on decorative references?
Could its identity emerge from what it is made from rather than what is applied to it?
Working with engineered palm material suggested that the answer might be yes.
The object becomes less important than the proposition behind it.
If a loudspeaker can be built from recycled palm, perhaps a gallery wall can be too.
If a gallery wall can, perhaps a school can.
If a school can, perhaps an entire architectural language begins to emerge.
History suggests that architecture advances precisely through these shifts, when a familiar material acquires unfamiliar capabilities.
I often think about another project that demonstrates this possibility.
Banna Brothers, an Emirati company rooted in the traditional preservation of meat through qadeed, built exhibition structures using the same recycled palm material. Their products, architecture and construction system all emerged from local knowledge while employing contemporary manufacturing. The result was neither nostalgic nor imported. It represented continuity through innovation.
This, to me, is where architecture becomes culturally significant.
Not when it reproduces history.
Not when it rejects history.
But when it allows inherited knowledge to acquire new agency.
Too often sustainability is presented as a concept imported from elsewhere, accompanied by foreign standards, foreign materials and foreign assumptions about place.
The palm tree offers another possibility.
Its significance here predates sustainability discourse by centuries.
It has always participated in cycles of growth, renewal and reuse. What has changed is our ability to engineer those cycles into contemporary construction.
The material did not become sustainable because the world changed.
The world finally developed the technology to understand what the material had always offered.
That is why I do not see the palm tree as a symbol of the past.
I see it as unfinished technology.
For generations it sustained life.
Today it has the potential to shape architecture.
Tomorrow it may define an architectural language that could not have emerged anywhere else.
The palm tree did not change.
We did.
Architecture should acknowledge that.
